Why California?
Sun-soaked kiwifruit vineyards are sprinkled throughout the golden state. Kiwifruit has a long growing season – up to 240 days and it needs a lot of sun and temperate climate to thrive. In California, kiwifruit can be grown in most areas of the Sacramento and Central San Joaquin Valleys. Major growing regions are in the northern California counties of Butte, Sutter, and Yuba, and the southern counties of Fresno, Kings, and Tulare.

How It All Began…
Kiwifruit is native to the Yangtze River Valley that runs through the middle of China. At the start of the 20th century, seeds were taken to New Zealand, where the crop was first commercially grown. Commercial production of kiwifruit in California began in the mid 1960’s. Frieda Caplan, owner and founder of Frieda’s Finest/Produce Specialties Inc. in Los Angeles, CA played a pivotal role in marketing the fruit, contributing to its growing appeal among Americans.
